BEING UNKNOWABLE EQUALS GOOD OPSEC

Some of the most poignant thoughts on warfare originate in the ancient Chinese classic Tao Te Ching: “Skilled warriors of old were, mysteriously powerful, so deep they were unknowable.” Our warriors of today are not “unknowable” like the skilled warriors of old. The body of Internet information that can be pieced together to create a picture of our military and national security capabilities, infrastructure, and personnel is alarming. Even more alarming is the ease with which the pulling together of this information is done. Advances in technology are creating doubled edged swords in cyberspace. Using point and click aggregation (PCA), quick and easy access is gained to our doctrine, organizations, and facts on our weapons and aircraft. Today we face a unique operations security (OPSEC) challenge in cyberspace complicated by point and click aggregation.
